Keynote  Designing Learning to Work: The Shift to a Skills-Based Talent Economy

Despite the aspirations of “College for All,” more than 60% of adults still lack a college degree in a world where degrees unlocks access to quality careers.  There is growing momentum amongst employers, educational institutions, policymakers and learners around skills and competencies as the new “atomic level” of education, learning, assessment, hiring and career growth.  What does this mean for learners, schools, companies, industries and funders?  How will this help the adult learner problem? What are the challenges this presents to various stakeholders, and how are those challenges being approached?  This talk will dive into these topics and questions and offer solutions.

Keynote  Student Basic Needs: The Heart of Student Success

Evidence shows that students’ ability to learn and succeed is directly linked to their ability to secure food, housing, mental healthcare, childcare, and other basic needs. Three in five college students experience one or more forms of basic needs insecurity. Promoting basic needs security is central to learning and is critical for college student success and degree completion. Plummeting enrollment numbers and changing dynamics in higher education represent an opportunity for higher education staff, faculty and administrators to use a data-informed, human-centered, equity-minded approach to adapt systems and practices to meet student basic needs. Dr. Anne E. Lundquist, Director and Assistant Professor at The Hope Center in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University will share the latest survey results from The Hope Center's student basic needs survey, highlight relevant policies and associated supports, and showcase examples of innovative and effective practices for institutions to create an ecosystem to ensure students' basic needs are met.

In this interactive session, work with a theoretical framework that incorporates student voice in reinterpreting and recontextualizing the maps we’ve made for them.

Track 1 The Importance of Agency in Improving Student Learning

In assessment, we often speak of continuous improvement. Our accrediting bodies laud the importance of always working to move the needle in a positive direction while campus administrators work to help faculty and staff find strategies and tactics for squeezing out a slightly better outcome in the next cycle. But, what happens when an outcome is at an optimal success level? Where the students who fail to meet it truly don’t meet it? When the process is as efficient as it can be? What do we do to show improvement in these cases? Especially when the faculty teaching courses or staff members running programs lack the agency they need to help some students succeed?

Assessment professionals and teaching and learning center directors devote significant energy to helping faculty advance better learning when they are the units of change (better pedagogical practices, curricular revisions, better outcome alignment on syllabi, etc.), but can not always do as much if departmental, college, or institutional barriers are preventing necessary action. Changes at these levels require more buy-in and more capital (of all types) but have a significant impact on student learning—and consequently, assessment. Some may not even be able to be solved or moved—but without being fully aware of them, we can’t ensure that not all of our assessment asks fall on faculty.

In this session, we will discuss what the end of continuous improvement can look like for assessment, areas with high faculty agency, and strategies for helping faculty and staff navigate areas where their agency is limited.

Presented by Will Miller, Associate Vice President for Accreditation and Assessment at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Highlights will include the importance of leadership from both Instruction and Student Services, how to build implementation teams from your constituency groups, and how to work well with the customer service/implementation support representatives from the software companies.
